The History of Koala Distribution in South Australia

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, koalas across Australia faced intense hunting, putting them at risk of extinction by the 1920s. At that time, in South Australia, koalas were only found in the south-east of the state.

National efforts were launched to help save these iconic animals. In South Australia, small groups of koalas were introduced to places like Kangaroo Island, the Lower Eyre Peninsula, the Riverland, and the Adelaide Hills.

Since then, koalas have made themselves at home in South Australia, with their numbers steadily increasing.
